This plateau, which is about the size of the entire state of Tennessee, has many roads some of which, at the most North easterly tip of the valley, will take you to the Yosemite National Park.
If this lush valley is not your scene (strangely enough, even in it’s highly populated state, California is 40% forested!), then why not try the more travelled costal routes which will take you via Los Angeles and San Francisco.
Some of the best and well-known routes across the State of California are Highway 50, (running east & west from Sacramento to South Lake Tahoe) and also south via Carson City, Nevada.
Highway 101 which again runs along the coast, north / south from Los Angeles to over the border with Oregon takes in such locations as Napa, Santa Barbara, Sonoma and San Luis Obispo. A little further to the west you’ll find the Pacific Coast Highway, otherwise known as ‘Hwy 1, PCH’, which tracks 101 further west along the cliff-tops of the Coast. Highway 395 also runs North and South if you are looking for another route to traverse the expanse between the southern California and the northern Sierras. Highway 14 is a popular alternative for this route if you fancy taking in the Mojave Desert and avoiding the winter skiing traffic.
